My name is William, but I acquired the nickname "Winter" a few years ago. It's a small little tale in itself, but it makes me think of Jayde's comments about folks thinking that taking on a new name is "fake" or "pretentious". I always introduce myself as William, but my nick has actually reached critical mass at this point, so it might as well be my real name in The Scene (r). But enough about that. I came to New York on the very first Sunday of 1998 with the intention of composing the next great American musical. Not the hat, cane, tap-dance, boy-meets-girl-and- it's-actually-lust-but-we'll-call-it-love kind of musical, but more of a swords drawn and banners waving epic style. And I'm quietly working away at it, but that's the most you'll hear me say on the subject. I'm a firm believer that an artist or writer who always talks about their works but never actually produces a finished product is talking too much. It doesn't matter whether or not you get published...it's about finishing what you start. Silicon alley has dragged me kicking and screaming into it's gaping maw. I work as a network admin for small new media firm, but I hate computers. I'm not a true geek. Frankly, I'd prefer to never work on another 'puter again. But it's hard to turn down the cold hard cash. And my pen and staff paper is portable, so I can still scribble down melodies wherever I am. I was a frequent club goer, but I've been in hibernation for a few months. Member of the Byzantium staff...Door guy sometimes, performed a few times, usually walked around handing out Hershey's Kisses and trying my best to make folks feel welcome. I tend to hide in my cave during the summer 'cause I strongly dislike hot weather. Give me ice, give me snow, give me freezing rain. Cold is a good thing. Musical tastes are varied. My holy trinity of bands is Tangerine Dream, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Jethro Tull. Irish Traditional, Pagan/hippie rock, Prog rock, Broadway show tunes, Extreme hard rock. Basically I either listen to ethereal dreamy new-agey music, or "music to torch down the house to". Get enough whiskey in me and I'll whip out my mandolin and start singing Irish pub songs. Appearance. Big guy. Real big guy. Tall n' broad. Scruffy goatee, long hair with the bangs pulled back into a topknot. I tend to dress with a biker aesthetic. Leather, boots, fingerless gloves. Sometimes I dress in barbaric leather garb for clubs (fairly covered up, though. I don't do loincloth barbaric. Think Viking). Like Kerry, I've had a number of folks think I was intimidating, 'cause when I get lost in thought (which is often, especially the lost part), I tend to scowl. I'm in touch with my inner child...although I can get in touch with my inner not-so-very-nice-guy if the need arises. But I do lapse into my daydream world at the drop of a pin and my concentration is not always the greatest. There are folks on this list that I feel I've been inadvertently distant to 'cause I was in a fog (Shumit comes to mind. The last time we talked I think I was not so welcoming. I was distracted. I apologize if I was unwelcoming). All right, I've said enough. *snowballs* to all the folks I know well, and to folks I haven't met...please, feel free to say hello. I don't bite. Growl and grumble and mutter maybe. Good hugs too. Winter --- I like my coffee black and bitter, like the truth. [1] First drink is on me when we cross paths again, old bean. ;)
